Kogepan is a crusty old fellow in a very literal sense. He is burnt piece of bread who, because he was left in the oven too long, is destined to a life spent in the bakery where he was made, unsold and uneaten. He spends his days with the other breads, drinking milk, thinking of ways to get bought by a customer and pondering the meaning of life.

The artwork for
Kogepan is minimalist in the extreme. There are not always backgrounds drawn in and the character designs are, as you might expect with them being mere loaves of bread, simple. On the other hand every one of them has its own personality: from the soft, appetising young breads to the emibttered, burnt, milk-guzzling grumpy old men such as Kogepan and his friends.

As childlike as it might seem, every episode of
Kogepan deals with everyday problems and more serious issues such as the importance of friendship and accepting yourself for who you are. The stories are told through the adventures and thoughts of our overcooked hero with a narrator and animation that is actually really sweet and charming, with a suitably light and unobtrusive soundtrack.

Each episode is an easily-digestible four minutes long so by the end of the ten episode run it is deceptive as to how addictive this show is.
Kogepan is a very unusual and hard-to-find little series but if you are in the mood for something light, whimsical but full of warmth and character the adventures of Kogepan and his friends are well worth tracking down.

Haha wow this is the only blog i’ve seen someone mention Kogepan! Ohhhh Kogepan… my favourite character. My sister went to Japan and asked someone “Where can i buy KOGEPAN?”, and that person replied “Why do you want to buy burnt bread?”
Any idea where i can download the anime - i bought the DVD but there are no subtitles.
