There's another unusual operation for our supernatually gifted surgeon in the form of a twelve year old boy with a bizarre skin condition. What at first appears to be an ordinary trip to the beach is in fact Ray's latest case (you didn't think they'd do the token 'beach episode' this early on in the series, did you?) - the patient is kept on a life support system in a tank at the aquarium. Apparently this was the only way in which his symptoms could be kept in check long enough for surgery to be carried out.

I have a suspicion that this was just an excuse to see Ray wearing a swimsuit (take Shinoyama's reaction, for instance) and it adds a bit of humour and levity into quite a grave situation. This seems to be the only constant niggle I have so far had with this series. One moment it's a tense thriller with edge-of-your-seat scientific stuff; the next there are comedy elements that don't sit right with the more serious themes and the
very serious central character.

Apart from that this wasn't a bad episode and it adds a little more to the situation surrounding Kenji, as well as the high drama of the operation scene that makes up the episode's middle section. It's still not explained why Kenji's confined to his room and cut off from visitors by a pane of glass but the story this time drew parallels between how he is confined and how the patient in the tank is also trapped, allegedly for his own benefit.

So, by the end of this episode we learn a little more about how Ray feels about her young friend Kenji and Shinoyama demonstrates his level head in a crisis. The comedy still feels a bit misplaced and my more rational side was less than impressed with the gratuitous fan service that went with it but overall it was pretty entertaining. The OP theme is still one of the best around...crank your speakers up for the opening credits!

“I have a suspicion that this was just an excuse to see Ray wearing a swimsuit” I agree but is that really so bad?
