Ray the Animation episode 4: Red Ribbon

After some issues with the video file it took me quite a while to get around to this but it proved to be (more or less) worth the effort.

In this episode Ray meets a face from her past; the result of which having some troublesome consequences for her colleagues at the hospital. This episode doesn’t have much in the medical thriller stakes but fills in the background to Ray and one or two of the supporting cast.

We learn a little about how the pirate doctor (okay, he’s the Director of the hospital but he’s quite obviously a thinly-disguised pirate) and how he saved her life, as well as dropping in some details about the ‘Organisation’ (that’s spelt with a capital ‘O’ and spoken aloud with ominous glances); a pretty good mixture of action and mystery.

For all that, this ought to add up to something that I’d really appreciate more. Maybe it’s the direction, the artwork…I can’t put my finger on the exact problem but whatever it is, it doesn’t gel somehow. There’s a new character introduced, Ray shows her more compassionate side and there’s a bit of scalpel-weilding action for good measure but the suspense never winds up tightly enough. I hope to be a bit more impressed with this show as the conspiracy side of things deepens. Plus the fact that, Mushishi aside, there’s precious little in the way of new fansub releases that’s grabbed my attention lately.
