Bokura Ga Ita episode 5: After the first kiss

Even though episode #4 had a happy ending every event has its consequences, as Nana and Yano soon discover…

This episode picks up the ‘warm fuzzy feeling’ of that moment and follows Nana’s and Yano’s relationship afterwards. While the high school romance premise sounds predictable Bokura Ga Ita clearly shows that romance is the most unpredictable thing of all! It’s this feeling of not knowing what will happen next that is keeping me watching, although the soft-focus art style invariably helps. Their relationship is progressing in a very natural and gradual way too, capturing the insecurities and shyness that go with it.

Fortunately the series also pays attention to the aforementioned consequences of their experiences or, more specifically, how those around them react to the news. For all the sweetness and romance the series still has a healthy quota of teenage angst lurking in the background that promises to surface sometime soon - thanks to the as-yet unexplained backgrounds to some of the characters. Nana doesn’t have any deep, dark secrets as far as I can tell but since the story is being told from her own perspective I don’t think it was necessary for the writers to include them.

This was an enjoyable episode, if only for seeing where Nana and Yano take things after the pivotal scene at the end of the last episode. Bokura Ga Ita is always touching and often funny but behind it all are simple but profound observations of young love and how people interact with those close to them.
