Bokura Ga Ita episode 6: The arrival of winter

The story moves forward quite a bit in this episode, starting with a scene in which Nana and Yano make sense of their respective views of what they want from their relationship. That is to say, how things should progress in a physical sense. Rest assured that it’s nothing too racy, though - merely another scene in which they encounter another new situation with the shyness and hesitation you might expect.

This isn’t an unexpected development but the same cannot be said of what else happens in this episode. During a shopping trip in which Yano shows the viewer (but not Nana) some gentlemanly thoughtfulness and discretion, we meet their classmate Takeuchi’s sister who works as a store clerk. An ordinary discussion at school the following day reveals something pretty unexpected about this - what purpose it serves in the story as a whole I don’t know. It’s not often I say this these days but I was left with a very strong feeling of “what?!”

Not quite as off-the-wall but arguably more interesting is the bizarre relationship between Yano and his ex-girlfriend’s sister Yuri. Yuri’s harsh attitude towards him isn’t abating one bit and at first she comes across as even more cold and unlikable than she has done in the series so far. That is, until there is what seems to be something of a reconciliation. In keeping with the surprises Bokura Ga Ita delivers another left-field piece of plotting and hints that it’s much more than that…what did go on between those two?

All in all this episode is the clearest example yet of Bokura Ga Ita achieving what appears at first to be a contradiction: it’s light and sweet but heavy and intense at the same time. Every now and then a detail about one of the characters appears seemingly out of nowhere and brings a new perspective on things: the sugary atmosphere is beginning to look deceptive.
