Bokura Ga Ita episode 7: What IS he thinking?!

As much as I’d classify Bokura Ga Ita as one in which nothing much ever happens this was an eventful and quite quickly-paced episode. In terms of character interaction, A LOT happens in these twenty-something short minutes.

Christmas is fast approaching and Nana is worrying about what to buy for Yano. Because of her financial situation she’s on something of a tight budget so has to go to great lengths to find the cash for it. Unfortunately it involves some white lies and sneaking around, which doesn’t go down well with the unknowing recipient.

It is at this point that Yano behaves in the typical ‘jealous boyfriend stereotype’ fashion as his suspicious nature gets the better of him. It is Takeuchi, the forever-understanding and dependable best friend who is dragged along and makes a brave attempt to talk some sense into his best buddy. For this reason I’m feeling more empathy towards Takeuchi than Yano, still mindful that the latter’s previous life experiences are influencing his present behaviour. It is a sad but truthful observation of human nature: Yano is behaving dishonestly and not showing much faith in his girlfriend, yet he expects those exact same things from her. In terms of emotional development, I think they both have a long way to go yet.

Meanwhile there is the ‘Yamamoto issue’ concerning the class’s resident Ice Maiden who is still acting on previous experiences with Yano. Whatever happened between them is obviously a result of Yano’s ex-girlfriend; I think we’re almost at the stage where we find out what. Nana’s till pretty naive about this side of things and it’s once again good old Takeuchi who offers a friendly ear. Someone please give the guy a pat on the back for all that!

This was an eventful and intriguing episode with, once again, some surprises to spice up the old slice-of-life formula. Unless he starts acting more like an adult though, Yano is going to grate on my nerves but the main take-home message from the characters in this episode is that that faith and trust take time to be earned.
