Bokura Ga Ita episode 8: “…There should be no secrets between us…”

One thing that always surprises me about this show is that I’m never overly enthusiastic about sitting down to watch the next episode, yet every time I’m pleasantly surprised afterwards at how much I enjoyed it. What with the eps being subbed so damned fast I really need to see to that…anyway, the story makes some more slow but sure progress, just not in the way I anticipated.

As per usual, Yano is being evasive with Nana’s questioning. Maybe she is being a little insecure but knowing what I know from a viewer’s point of view, I can’t blame her for that. In contrast Yano’s still being the fickle and hypocritical one but a moment of remorse just about saves him from my disliking him completely.

Fortunately for them both, Takeuchi is still doing a brilliant job as the ‘friend in the middle’ and confirms for us what we all suspected but were waiting for confirmation on: something (however vague and innocent it might have been) DID happen between Yano and Yuri so Nana’s still being lied to. I really feel sorry for her now, especially since she’s putting so much effort into soul-searching and assessing her own feelings. My view is that Nana’s growing up emotionally a little faster than her boyfriend is. For all this though, there are still some details that aren’t being revealed: I’m not even going to hazard a guess as to how long the writers will keep us hanging on for.

This episode meanders and speculates quite a bit but deals in more detail with teenagers’ (I’m guessing Yano’s and Nana’s age to be around 15) attitudes towards sex. Some of the scenes are quite serious (I know some fellow BGA followers in the blogsphere are finding it a bit unsettling too) but others are quite comical. The Engrish lesson scene in particular had me chuckling a little, albeit cringing at the same time.

These scenes do highlight the issues associated with peer pressure and complications in relationships but they inject some much-needed humour into the series. The storyline could be moving forward a little more quickly I suppose but I don’t know how much else is in store in the last five remaining episodes. Judging by the fact that Takeuchi is being a much, much more likable person than Yano is right now (as in more deserving of Nana’s affections), it wouldn’t surprise me if Nana finally has enough of the deceit but if that does happen, don’t blame me for jinxing it.

yeah, its highly unsettling how these people view sex. but with the whole society gearing towards such a path its not that far from reality..
