Bokura Ga Ita episode 10: Yano is a bastard. Official

I’ll try to keep this from being another anti-Yano rant but since he’s been a total git in this episode I’m not making any promises. Firstly there’s the business with Yuri and the photograph, which made him come across as, well, a bastard. Whatever happened between them in the past could never have warranted what he did. It’s credit to the show’s writers, really, that Yuri has gone from being a cold-hearted character in the eyes of the viewer to a lonely and troubled human being.

Everything in this episode seems to point to 1). Yano is selfish, manipulative and hypocritical, 2). Nanami is sweet, pleasant and deserving of better and 3). Takeuchi is a thoroughly decent guy. The whole birthday party incident was brought about by Nanami being (in my opinion at least) downright fed up with her boyfriend’s behaviour but afterwards she and Takeuchi were apologising to each other. Considering the circumstances, neither had anything to feel bad about! As always, it is good old Takeuchi who’s polite, thoughtful and generally a good friend.

He even understands how his own behaviour can worsen the jealousy thing and promises to alter his behaviour when around Yano accordingly. Of course, Nanami is not immune to jealousy either: after all, that’s the reason for the photo situation in the first half of the episode. Actually, the decision that brought Namami to the party in the first place was a gleefully mischievous act of female revenge…Chan-wook Park would be proud! Her display of jealousy is nowhere near as severe or all-consuming as Yano’s though, in which he pretty much demands that she excuses his behaviour before having the cheek to say that she could never understand him.

I still feel sorry for Nanami and Takeuchi but also for Yuri, who is being made to suffer by past events and Yano’s inability to face them as he should. Fortunately the final scene suggests that Yuri is getting her own back on Yano too, although it might be to let some ghosts of her lay to rest at last. The next episode is going to be a good one I think…

I found this to be quite a saddening episode, even with the humourous moments at Takeuchi’s party to lighten the mood of a very awkward situation. I know I’ve turned this into an anti-Yano rant again but seriously kid, you have some great classmates and an understanding girlfriend. Let bygones be bygones and please, stop being a bastard!
