Bokura Ga Ita episode 11: The truth about ‘that day’

And so we finally find out the story concerning Yano’s ex (why is it her name is the same as his current girlfriend?). To be honest it’s not much of a revelation but the fact that Yuri is telling Yano all this after two years is, to my mind at least, much more interesting in terms of what it says about her character.

It could be argued that she just wants to make the truth known but the way she delivers the news (including the cold way in which she excludes Nanami) suggests that she’s motivated by the way in which Yano has been treating her - both now and in the past. Actually, the biggest bombshell is something that Yano already knows…except Nanami doesn’t. Yet. In this scene Yano the hypocrite is plain for all to see as he freezes his girlfriend out of the discussion. I still think he’s a bastard!

Before I go into an anti-Yano rant again I’ll digress and focus on Nanami for a bit. Up until this episode she’s been something of a doormat, allowing Yano to treat her unfairly purely because she loves him. She tries to confront him about his attitude but he goes all evasive, turns the charm on and nothing changes for the better. Nanami swallows his lies hook, line and sinker; she is no happier and he doesn’t learn. This time she seems to be wising up to his dishonesty a little and even gives him a quick slap round the face! I was really hoping that she’d be able to speak out at last - their relationship wouldn’t go anywhere otherwise and neither would be any better off for it.

Once again it’s good old Takeuchi who acts as a substitute for Yano’s conscience, which is just as well. Yano claims that he has no regrets - Takeuchi sees through this straightaway and it’s clear that Yano is lying to even himself. This show is beginning to get almost frustrating in that one of the central characters still isn’t developing emotionally, and has to rely on a kind friend to state the obvious about the error of his ways. In contrast, Nanami has decided to stop crying into her pillow and stand up to Yano - unfortunately love is blind and she admits to herself that, whatever happens, “I still can’t hate him.” after everything that’s going on.

I think things have come to a head now. Yuri’s secrets are out and I think Nanami’s finally had enough with her boyfriend’s lying. It could well mean he’ll lose her over all this but quite honestly as tough a lesson as it will be, it is a lesson he needs to learn if he is to avoid repeating the same old mistakes.
