Bokura Ga Ita episode 12

I think we’ve reached a turning point. It couldn’t have come at a better time since the zillions of new October season shows are beckoning and I was considering dropping this series entirely. Anyway, it gives a twist and a half before the end so it survives my series-dropping axe.

Nanami on a guilt trip again

Nanami has more or less accepted the fact that Yano slept with his ex-girlfriend’s sister but I can only share her feelings of confusion as to why. Okay, so Yuri is in love with him
and of course he’s a bastard but still…this requires some explanations. Yano does the usual ‘grovelling boyfriend’ thing by hanging around outside her house, handing over some flowers and so on. Nanami’s mum seemed more readily taken in by the bouquet gesture but it’s a while before Nanami backs down like she always does and agees to speak to him and even goes on a date with him again.

When will that boy learn?!

Normally Nanami’s meek and submissive nature annoys me but this episode has a real surprise in store: as per usual, Bokura Ga Ita threatens to bore me to death but in actuality has me thinking “…I never saw that coming…” every time. Being so slowly-paced, there isn’t much to say that doesn’t spoil things I’m afraid - there’s a nice beach scene and an all-too-accurate portrayal of how people can’t let past feelings go.

It's your last chance, buddy

That is probably the central take-home message of the series: those who dwell on the past inevitably let it interfere with the present and are less likely to learn from their mistakes. Hopefully Nanami on the other hand is going to come out of this situation a stronger person, regardless of what the end result will be. In particular I hope she takes Takeuchi’s advice to heart this time - the guy knows how to give his friends advice, and Yano is already paying for not listening to what he has to say.

A moment of reconciliation?

The list of new shows is as long as my arm but for the time being Bokura Ga Ita is staying on my ‘current’ one. The way in which it toys with the viewer is probably intentional, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating. By the end of this episode though, I can safely say I was pleasantly surprised at how it had turned out; now I’m genuinely looking forward to the next outing this time.
