@Orion: I've read reviews where the show's panned because of the furries (they're dog girls? I was beginning to wonder about that...) but I was pleasantly surprised with these episodes. The Ainu inspiration intrigues me actually - it has the obvious Japanese aesthetic to it but a native American influence too. *makes mental note to do some more research about Ainu-related history*

@Karry: as far as I can tell with the US and UK releases it's kept its original, tongue-twisting title - I heard rumours about it being changed to Shadow Warrior too but fortunately this doesn't appear to have happened.

"Perhaps the single most original aspect is the title - kudos to ADV for retaining it"

Huh ? I was sure they actually changed it, to some "Shadow Warrior" or other such nonsense.

Utawarerumono is an oft maligned series, and while it's nothing spectacular I definitely enjoyed it. Many of the characters are pretty flat, but the unusual nature of the world and setting largely make up for it, IMO. While many disagree, I thought it went in a genuinely interesting direction, even if the ending was a bit silly.

Now if we can just all pretend that those horrible OVA side-stories never happened. :P

"The music isn’t particularly outstanding..."

I actually thought the music was pretty good, although most of the credit goes to the outstanding, Ainu-inspired OP and ED, as well a few of the better tracks composed by Anze Hijiri.

"...although those of you with a thing for catgirls will be particularly drawn in by this..."

While this is probably still true, I'm pretty sure Eruru and Aruru are actually dog-girls. ;)
