2007 in 12 day 10: Moyashimon

I have a soft spot for student-based comedy drama, not to mention a vested interest in all things scientific. The whimsical win that is Moyashimon is right up my street in pretty much every respect; taking the bizarre premise of a guy who can see microbes without the aid of microscopes or magnifying glasses, it follows the progress of the strangely gifted Sawaki and his fellow students through agricultural college. Think of it as a rustic Honey and Clover, with added yeast.

Sawaki and friends

Memorable moment

Moyashimon is chock full of little details regarding student life (portraying it in a very true-to-life, warts and all way, it has to be said) not to mention great pieces of trivia concerning the life sciences that you probably wouldn’t hear outside of a lecture theatre of wildlife documentary. These two aspects alone are enough for me to declare it a great series but the icing on the cake is the way in which the microbes are shown, as Sawaki sees them. That is, adorable, talking little balls of cuteness.

Let's brew sake!

At the time of writing I have a bottle of genuine Japanese sake in my room, courtesy of a well-stocked supermarket in Manchester’s Chinatown, that’s begging to be opened and shared with my family during the festive holiday. The great thing is, I now have a working knowledge of the entire sake brewing process, all thanks to Moyashimon and its microscopic stars. The episode in which the unspeakably kawaii species of Aspergillus oryzae give us a running commentary of how they go about the process of brewing sake is not only cute to the power of cute but is also educational without alienating casual viewers who aren’t overly bothered about science. Later episodes explore other aspects of agricultural college but the Tachikoma-esque exclamations of “Let’s brew sake!” will forever remain one of the coolest things I’ve seen all year.

    “Kamosu zo!”

Moyashimon is so fantastic; once again you’ve done a great job of summarizing why the show is so whimsically fun to watch. All the moreso because it’s carved out a really unique niche - very slice-of-life, but packaged in a very different way than I’ve ever seen. :)

Along with Kaiji this is the best of this season (DC doesn’t count). I love the bacterium.. SO KAWAII. Couldn’t help myself, But your a liar if you say they aren’t cute.

I’m jealous of your bottle of sake as well, You should do a review based upon it.
