I think one of the ways to fully enjoy this OAV is to not expect anything, and love it for what it is. Comparing it with other series will more often than not end up with disappointment, because it's not really as deep as other romance stories out there >_<

It's just a wonderfully crafted romance OAV on its own, and I loved it :)

@Sasa: I don't know what to say really, apart from saying that I'm sorry you were so disappointed. All I can suggest is that the hype might have built it up too much...maybe. I honestly don't know. The OAV just seemed to come as a change of pace for me - nothing ground-breaking happened, which made the 'silly misunderstandings' theme a healthy change of pace from everything else that's on offer right now.

Maybe my sense of judgement isn't as sharp for this sort of thing as I thought it was...for what it's worth I got a similar feeling of bemusement from Fruits Basket. After reading four volumes it was still leaving me cold, although I can't even begin to explain why.

I actually wanted to leave this completely un-commented, but now that so many people rave about these OVA, I really have to say something, I guess. Maybe it's because I have watched and read way too many romance related stories, but this series really did not impress me at all. The story was cute and nicely executed of course, but not more. I have seen the idea of telling the story two times from both people's perspective before (in the manga Kiss Zekkou Kiss to be exact), and I am fully aware that this storytelling works because the characters are so beautifully japanese and run from one misunderstanding into the other.

I guess I just expect more from a good romance story than overcoming some silly misunderstandings, or I perceive the concept of 'unconditional love' to be the most romantic in love stories, a concept that does not appear in 5cm or Tokyo Marble Chocolate at all. Therefore, in my opinion, Tokyo Marble Chocolate is nothing compared to Millennium Actress, Doll (a Takeshi Kitano movie) or Kare Kano.
