I just finished watching this straight through after coming across it on Netflix. I think the last episode that was handled the way it was originally envisioned was the episode where Taro talks to Makoto's mother and she makes the freaky face. After that everything starts turning upbeat (his mother lives, Taro's mother gets happy and stable for no apparent reason, Masayuki's parents work it out, and so on). The loose ends: what did the abandoned hospital have to do with everything? Why is the mountain a spiritual hot-spot? Why is the dark giant continually acting out his death? Who was the woman that Taro saw in the hospital at the beginning of the show in the hallway? If Miyako isn't in the hidden realm, then why do Taro and Hiruta see her in the forest and school hallway? Why did Makoto's mother leave him with his psycho grandmother? What happened to the missing scenes at the intro (kids running from a giant worm spirit in the abandoned town, Miyako or Mizuki wading through water in a storm, Taro outside the Sake brewery in the snow)?

I was waiting to hear something like an original experiment with artificial life using patients (or better yet child patients) in the basement of the old hospital. The Ogami sect could have been the originators of this when Makato's grandmother was young, and she was at it again when Taro and his sister were kidnapped. Anyway, I think it could have been much better and was originally intended to be. I smell studio management interference...

I often thought the old wanderer looked a lot like a tengu, and when the various priests from different creeds project at the end to try and welcome the new biooid spirits and get them to cooperate with the natural ones, it crossed my mind that those individuals might actually be tengu or the traditional mountain spirit gods. The only contradiction to this I can think of is that the old man had never projected prior to that, and I'm not sure what need tengu or gods would have to project to begin with. You would assume they could transcend any plain of existence simply due to their divine nature etc. What do you guys think?

i really liked this anime, really interesting but the end umm, i was expecting something more exciting, cuz they were saying all the time(in episode's preview and Spark) that maybe we`re on someone's computer and things like that, Spark things, implicated order.

though, i did understand the message of "live your life and don't repeat the same mistakes of the previous generation, give importance to things like friendship and love" but that end, to all the mysterious thingss that happened on the show, for me, it's a little disappointing, the manga has to be like this, i guess..maybe i don't like really happy endings, cuz this was a happy like really happy one.

i liked Tarou, is a good protagonist but my favorite character is..MASAYUKI XDDD i love him~...kya? XD i just wanted him to be alive XD
and i liked doctor Hirata..a lot, so interesting, his goals, his brain, why he was still going to Suiten and that things. at the start i thought he was a bad guy O.O but he was a really nice one ^^
so for me a 8.5 of a 10

@Peter S: good point. The three lads form a strong bond but it takes time for them to earn one another's trust - quite a true-to-life way of portraying it actually. Taro is the main character of course and his reaction to Miyako was both touching and telling, but there wasn't really a character I disliked at all.

@Bateszi: I think it may have actually been Miyako who was helping him, but I'm not certain. As is always the case in Nakamura/Konaka efforts, I suspect a rewatch would be a rewarding experience. Getting back to Taro again, his 'ordinaryness' may have come across as boring to some (especially when Masa and Makoto were interesting in their own right) but he's a perfect lens for viewing the series through. 'Realistic and subtle' sums up why I warmed to his character in the en too.

I really liked the last episode, but I can understand some complaints that it felt rushed. Going by Naruto standards, at least 5 episodes could have been spent by Tarou running through endless corridors and opening doors to empty rooms!

Though I expected as much, one thing that remains a bit of mystery to me is who this "person" was that Tarou would occasionally meet during his O.B.Es (not Snark, the other, more mysterious one). In one of the last scenes, he says that his sister "isn't dead", but is "alive inside me". That might suggest that it's the spirit\soul of his sister that has been guiding him all this time and, in that case, you can understand why Miyako would brake-down into tears.

Just to echo your thoughts on Tarou, I thought he was a really interesting central character. It's rare to find a story that's based around such a thoroughly normal boy and his reactions to everything around him were so realistic and subtle. I've read a few reviews where people have called him boring or whatever, but I really liked him.

I was going to post an epic rant, but you pretty much touched on everything. Well, maybe a minor one.

One more part of the three kids' dynamic that you see in the blurred bit in the OP is that they're not standing together. They're not really friends, but learn to trust each other in seeking their goals.

I loved how Taro got to tell the little girl (whose name escapes me): "You're not anyone else! You're you!" He turns the tables on his mistake from a few eps ago.

Yeah, that last ep was rushed to say the least. For a moment I wondered if I had accidentally skipped an episode. All of a sudden they have a plan! There's a typhoon! Huh, what? And I was surprised to see all the characters in one piece at the end, smiling and even posing for pictures!

I wound up loving the show, but I wonder what kept me going at the start, when it was one of dozens of new shows and I get impatient easily. Thinking back I think it was because of Taro. They got me to empathize with him early on, so I kept watching. Then fun weird stuff happened.
