I read your entertaining review on 2012, but I'll post here. I hesitate to congratulate YK for updating Minmei's music (save for Bless the Little Queen) because the ones that she did sound too similar to those arrangements in Mylene sings Lin Minmei. Info here. Too bad I can't find the arrangement credits, but it's not listed among YK's works.

@Ghostlightning: I'm afraid no review on this blog will be as objective as some others either (it's a fan blog after all)! After watching the 2012 flashback movie, my first impression is that YK has done a fine job of updating the 80s songs for a 21st century audience (reviewage here). The Bless the Little Queen version of the DYRL? theme is particularly spectacular though.

I'm not sure whether Ms Kanno is getting lazy - it could be her contribution to the sheer amount of nostalgia served up by Frontier. As long as I find the songs enjoyable, I really don't mind!

@The Sojourner: Loving Azure Ether (which I'm listening to as I type this) but Anata no Oto is fantastic too - possibly my fave of the disc. The more I listen to Megumi Nakajima, the more I think that she has a great career ahead of her (assuming Frontier doesn't become a burden for her as the original Macross did with Mari Iijima); her voice is so sprightly and expressive.

Yousei, Ao Ether and Anata No Oto were what really made the OST enjoyable for me. I have to say that Megumi Nakajima greatly suits the role of Ranka because she is able to channel her 'rookie' eagerness into the songs sung by Ranka, who happens to be an aspiring artiste in the story.

Oh yeah, the Little Queen version of DYRL made me all mushy when I heard 'Mo~ Hitori Bocchi Jya Nai'.

I'm glad you posted a review because I didn't want to do it, and it's tough to go through life having the last review of this ost in my head being Kaioshin's.

I won't pretend to objectivity, being a fellow lifer I relinquish any claim I have on it, but I do agree with your assessment of the album. What interests me is your opinion on the YK covers/arrangement of the original Minmei discography.

I intended to make a full post about this but since I can't post tracks without much difficulty, by your leave I'll hemorrhage this wall of text in your comments section.

When i first herd Ai oboete ima suka (deculture edition) I was not happy with it, but my thirst for anything Macross was OVER NINE THOUSAND by then and I loved it anyway and continue to do so. When I heard Watashi no kare wa pairotto (Miss Macross ed) I wasn't too happy as well - but same story since my reaction was worse than those poor zentrans in Gallia 4.

Why would YK arrange it this way? I couldn't wrap my head around it. They sound so... ringtone friendly (see: Ninjin Loves You Yeah!).

But I discovered the Mylene Sings Minmei album, and oh my god. The YK arrangements of the above 2 are nearly identical. Furthermore, Mylene's covers are AWESOME. I'm having trouble with the album I got from the torrent (it plays on iTunes but doesn't dl on my iPod, and imeem doesn't seem to play them) so I gave up posting the article. The one on mchan also yields a .rar file that won't yield.

So what to take from this? Did YK get lazy? It seems so, as much as I hate to admit it about my favorite musician. The saving track is Bless the Little Queen - which is a far superior arrangement for DYRL. I'm definitely interested in what you make of all this.
