The Lost Boys

The Lost BoysWhen Michael and his younger brother Sam move to the Californian town of Santa Carla with their mother, they expect to lead an uneventful and probably boring life. However, when Michael falls in with the wrong crowd it becomes clear that there is more to Santa Carla than meets the eye: the whole town is a haven for vampires. Before long, it is up to Sam to save his brother from the changes that have recently come over him.

The Lost Boys combines moments of shock and suspense, a rocking 80s-themed soundtrack, splashes of humour and fine performances from the hip young cast to give a classic fun horror film. Michael and Sam, played by Jason Patric and Corey Haim, make a convincing duo as do The Goonies star Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander as the hilarious young vamire hunters, the Frog brothers. Kiefer Sutherland does a fantstic job as the charming and dangrous David, who could well have provided the inspiration for Spike in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

While the stars of the film and the soundtrack (which includes the likes of INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, Lou Gramm, Aerosmith and fantastic opening theme by Gerard McMann) made it the hippest vampire flick at the time of its release, the fashions do look a little dated now. However, this adds to the retro appeal of the film and makes it all the more entertaining.

The DVD has recently been rereleased as a 2 disc set, including commentaries, interviews a a load of other interesting extras which are a must for existing fans of the film or anyone who wants a copy of their own.

In Summary

A hip and thrilling take on the vampire legend which has remained surprisingly fresh and enjoyable after nearly twenty years. Well worth watching.
